Deacons were first called to serve in early New Testament churches as Christians saw a need to provide for widows, the sick, and the poor. Today, deacons function to extend the compassion and service of the church to her members and those of the community in need.
A Servant’s Heart – Written by Deacon Jerry Fitzgerald (2024)
Wow! Here I am, a brand new Deacon in service of our Lord Jesus Christ at Winter Park Presbyterian Church. First: find the room for the first meeting (Room 301)… got it! Second: learn to spell “Presbyterian”… got that! As I listened to each member in turn I realized that we all shared a common (and critically important) trait; we have a “servant’s heart”. Our heart has told us to do this, we must, for “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen”. A servant’s heart is one that cares for others at the expense of itself, readily yields to the gentle urges of the Holy Spirit, and seeks no earthly reward. Each of us will work hard at our tasks; some simple, some mind-numbingly difficult, and always with the prayer that we will be received into the Kingdom with the greeting of our Lord, “Well done, good and faithful servant”. What more could we ask? Do you have a “servant’s heart”? Do I? I believe you do or you wouldn’t be reading this. My prayer is that each of us will, in the admonition of the Apostle “test ourselves continually to assure ourselves that we remain faithful”, and that our every thought and action will point to that eternal goal. Wow!
